About "Stepping Up" Long Island Jewish Teen Foundations

The“Stepping Up” Long Island Jewish Teen Philanthropy Program,
began in 2012, through a partnership between the Jewish Teen Funders Network and Long Island
synagogues, schools, and Jewish Community Centers. The giving circles associated started through this program have reached reached at least 50 teens annually in at least 4 institutions, since 2012. Participating teens learn about pressing needs in their
communities and how they, as philanthropists-in-training, can make a
difference. They learn by giving, as they work together on a collective
grantmaking process.

Each of the teen foundations have
a minimum of $1,000 to award as grants. The teens work as foundation boards to
create a mission statement to guide their work, and each teen foundation
determines 1-2 issue areas, out of the ares of most pressing need on Long Island (education, health, housing, hunger,
or jobs) to address through their grantmaking. They review
grant proposals that fall within their mission, and may choose to conduct site
visits for further due diligence. They then decide which organization(s) they
want to support, and award grants each Spring.
