Agahozo-Shalom Youth Village

ASYV is a living, learning, and healing community. Our holistic approach promotes emotional and intellectual growth, practical skills, and a commitment to give back.

Location: New York , NY
Year founded: 2008

The mission of the Agahozo-Shalom Youth Village (ASYV) is: To enable orphaned and vulnerable youth to realize their maximum potential by providing them with a safe and secure living environment, health care, education and necessary life skills. Education and service are used to model and create socially responsible citizens in Rwanda and around the world. In order to meet the needs of teenagers struggling with the aftereffects of extreme vulnerability, Agahozo-Shalom seeks to “restore the rhythm of life” by providing a safe, structured environment in which they can heal and thrive. Agahozo-Shalom is not an orphanage or a boarding school; it is an innovative living, learning, and healing community in which young people band together to form surrogate families of peers and receive essential education and support from a network of dedicated staff. Within AYSV’s supportive and structured community, the rhythm of life is being restored to each of our residents, with the ultimate goal of equipping young people who have lived through great trauma to become healthy, self-sufficient, and engaged in rebuilding their nation. ASYV meets the needs of its residents through the delivery of several integrated programs. The Agahozo-Shalom model, based on the idea that, “It takes a village to raise a child,” combines three essential elements to encourage intellectual and emotional growth: structured education, enriching extracurricular programs, and maybe most importantly, the loving support of a family. We focus on Tikkun Halev (repairing the heart), as well as Tikkun Olam (repairing the world). The Tikkun Halev programs focus on creating a home, giving the children life skills and building self-confidence. The Tikkun Olam program has our students going into the neighboring communities and ensuring basic human rights for the community members. They become a voice for the powerless, advocating for the rights of widows and orphans. It is by looking outward, to their friends, families, and communities, that they can find inner peace — pursuing a future that is inextricably linked to a sense of service. Agahozo-Shalom is restoring the rhythm of life for the next generation by providing an alternative for the most vulnerable youth in Rwanda, providing education, socialization, and opportunities to navigate towards a bright future. Our graduates emerge from Agahozo-Shalom as balanced young adults who are not only able to care for themselves and their families, but who are committed to making their community, their country, and their world, a better place.
